2.04.05 — Dreams come true
Whenever we would get a warm, sunny day in the middle of winter, I would always wish I could take my computer outside and work. Well, today I got my wish. It's 63 degrees, and I'm out on the deck working at my laptop. Life is good.

2.03.05 — Government mix up
I'm sure most people outside of Nebraska did not have as much news coverage as we did on Johnny Carson. He's a local hero here. Both he and Tom Brokaw worked at WOWT so whenever either one of them is in the news, they are really in the news. One thing we found confusing is in the pronunciation of the town where he lived. Some people say Norfolk, just as it is written, but most say Norfork. It was quite confusing to us until we heard why.

A federal government mix-up gave the town its permanent name. By the spring of 1868, German farmers informed the government of their desire to establish a post office for the new town of "North Fork" (so named for the North Fork of the Elkhorn River). Government officials assumed an error in spelling, and proclaimed that a new post office for "Norfolk" be established. The name remains the same over 100 years later, but most Nebraskans, and Norfolkans, call it "Norfork." Official incorporation of Norfolk, granted by the state of Nebraska, occurred in 1881.

Here is information (more than you probably want to know) about "Norfork". And here is information (again, more than you will want to know) on Johnny Carson's legacy in Nebraska.

What clips did the news stations play out here the most? An interview with Johnny talking about turtle races on his first show, "The Squirrel's Nest" and this joke:

Every Lincoln's birthday reminds me of my old girlfriend back in Nebraska: Gina Stachatori. She went to Lincoln High and she was voted Ms. Lincoln — because every guy took a shot at her on the balcony.
